Ladies Broomball In Full Swing!

you see

this lady

 do this,

out of the way!

Holy Smokes!

What a swing!

Ladies Broomball is in full swing at Shelburne's Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex (CDRC) each Sunday as two games are played starting at 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. This game is not as easy as it looks. It might look like stick hockey, but factor in the ice, just trying to navigate, you have a workout you won't forget soon! there are presently four teams and the league is looking for more players. While most players are comprised of Shelburnites, there are quite a few players from out lying areas. High School age girls who are looking for a challenge are welcome.

Organizer, Leesa Peat commented, " We started last Sunday. We have 4 teams again and play every Sunday at 11am or 12pm. The league will be in our Ladies Auxiliary Craft sale this year selling baked goods for a league fundraiser to try and off set the cost. Craft sale is 12 & 13 of December."

The sport is very popular and Peat is hoping that once the word is out that the league is up and running, more participants will be attracted commenting, " The team names are Roy's Chicks, Horizon's, Striders and Ferrets (Alliston). We have girls on our team coming from Milton, Down town Toronto, Angus. Horizon's goalie comes from Kitchener. I guess we all love the game so much they are willing to travel."

And the desire to play is definitely having something to do with the fast paced action, ultimate skill on your feet and the challenge to score with these very skilled players. If you thought Broomball is for the fain of heart, check out a game. You will not be disappointed. The speed of the ball can take you down with the impact if you do not have your wits about you! Facebook Lesa Peat if you could like to find out more about this league over 20 years strong or visit  Shelburne Ladies Broomball on Facebook.

The Centre Dufferin Junior Boys Hockey Team Won All 3 Games Winning Tournament Championship In Erin On Tuesday, March 31, 2015!

                                                                                                                                                  Photo Provided By Deb Freeman

The Centre Dufferin Junior Boys Hockey Team won all 3 games to clinch the tournament championship in Erin on Tuesday. After a scoreless first period against Norwell, the Royals fell behind on a power play goal by Brodie Heffele. Evan Spencer evened the score three minutes later with an assist to Darrin Janke and then Centre Dufferin started firing on all cylinders with three unanswered goals in the third. Zack Trott scored unassisted early before Spencer scored his second on assists from Jackson Nasato and Jesse Sterling. Sam Willoughby capped the first victory scoring on the short side from an assist from Alex Beam. Curtis Latter got the win in net for the Royals.
Spencer opened the scoring against Westside with an amazing wrap around goal early in the first period before J. Llewellyn evened the score at 1-1. Nasato finished a great passing play from Spencer and Sterling late to win the first period. Westside battled back with 2 goals and an assist from L. Raymond in the second but the Thunder had no answer for the spectacular play of Spencer, Nasato and Sterling who scored six more times with highlight reel plays for the Royals while Kyle Tomlinson, Scott Decker and Mitchell Skilton chipped in single points in a 9-5 victory in game two as Jackson Dupre earned the victory between the pipes.
Aaron Fuller opened the scoring in game three with a great point shot early in the first period before Liam McGill evened the score for Erin less than 2 minutes later. Joe Freeman-Woollett came up big in net for Centre Dufferin in the second to best the solid play of Riley Buttler in the Erin net as each team exchanged excellent scoring opportunities before Jesse Sterling scored late in the second on an outstanding individual effort on the penalty kill. Matt Armstrong opened the scoring in the third for Centre Dufferin with a booming point shot assisted by Dakota Prentice and Spencer. Nasato sealed the 4-1 Royals victory on a great feed from Jesse Stirling. The Royals got stronger in each game outscoring all opponents 9-1 in third periods as they ramped up their offensive and defensive prowess over the day. Thanks to all the parents, siblings and grandparents who turned out in force to support this year's Centre Dufferin junior boys' hockey team as they take their winning streak to the University of Guelph next Tuesday and Wednesday.
Team members include: Curtis Latter, Joe Freeman-Woollett, Jackson Dupre, Charlie Ardis, Matt Armstrong, Alex Beam, Andrew Beam, Scott Decker, Quinn deLaat, Ty Doney, Trent Downey, Aaron Fuller, Jesse Sterling, Kyle Tomlinson, Zack Trott, Jordan Varley, Sam Willoughby, Captain Evan Spencer and Assistant Captains Jackson Nasato, Dakota Prentice and Mitchell Skilton with Coaches Ryan Stewart, Mike deLaat, Pete Jensen, Erik Zeidler and Steve Stewart.

Find out what this young
 Shelburne Curling Club Member
 has her sights set on!

The interview with Shelburne Curling Club Coach John Gregory and his daughter, Kaelyn Gregory has a lot of of background noise because Shelburne Curling Club members know how to enjoy themselves during a Fun Spiel!

Interview With Shelburne Curling Club Coach, John Gregory Reveals

Shelburne Curlers Have Talent!

The Shelburne Freelancer caught up with Shelburne Curling Club Coach, John Gregory and his daughter, Shelburne Curling Club member, Kaelyn Gregory during the Shelburne Curling Club's End of the season Fun Spiel. Young Gregory is only sixteen years old but has been Curling since she was 7, when she was then in the Little Rocks Division. With her drive, skill and determination, Gregory has no problem with setting her sights high and her father has every faith in her and her team mates.

"You have to be in shape to Curl. It's important to stay fit. I play other sports with my high school, I jog, and Curling is a work out in itself," explained Gregory adding,"I play second and it's a vigorous position."

Gregory knows what it takes to win and is prepared to work as hard as she can to achieve her goals. Gregory's ultimate goal is to play at the Olympic level and she is focused on the big picture.

As revealed in the short video interview, there is a lot of talent in Shelburne and one day we may get to watch Kaelyn achieve her goals.

Shelburne Curling Club Executive Board Member, Tom Little explained that because the Club's ice comes out March 28th, the Club hosted a Two on Two Fun Spiel consisting of 32 players. "We've only got a couple weeks left so we're doing fun things before the season ends. A Fun Spiel is a slightly different format and it's just for fun, it's not to be taken seriously."

As the Shelburne Club is financially self-sustained, the Club rents the lounge out during the off season beginning in April through to October. The lounge comfortably accommodates 50-60 people and is often rented out for birthdays, anniversaries, company lunches and other events. Because the club is self -sustaining financially, it's plain to see the investment may seem like all money raised is for the club, but in reality, kids like Gregory spend so much time in their safe environment, honing in on their skills encouraging them to achieve goals, the investment is clearly in Shelburne youth and the community. For more information go to

What a great Curling Club and it's right here in Shelburne!
